Counter-offers can be flattering, but there can be risks you should be aware of.

  • Your loyalty could be questioned.

  • Your career track could be blocked if you accept a counter-offer.

  • You could be the first to go during cutbacks.

  • It could be a tactic to keep you onboard while your replacement is hired.

Surveys suggest that up to 80% of employees that accept a counter-offer leave their employer within six months due to termination (fired, laid off, etc.) or because of promises not kept. Tempting as they may appear, counter-offers decrease your chances of achieving your career potential.
